Set amidst the gorgeous Val d’Orcia landscape and Valdichiana, at an easy driving distance from Siena, Sarteano is a small town that played an important role in the local past and history, as the ancient castle and the fortress testify, both popular places of interest.
At a stone’s throw from the old city center there’s another castle - or better, what remains of the old building - surrounded by the wild forest, that secretly holds the popular legend of the Countess Dorilla, arrogant lady of the castle, strangled by an enormous snakes for getting impatient at the priest arrival, supposed to celebrate the holy mess. All the surroundings are also rich in Etruscan tombs and findings, now collected in the local Archeological Museum.
There are many natural areas and parks close to Sarteano, where you may find thermal pools whose waters have curative properties, like Bagno Santo, Pools Park and the Natural Reserve of Pietraporciana.
A traditional event you should not miss is the Giostra del Saracino taking place on the 15 of August and dating back to the Middle Age: besides the knights fight, the parade in medieval costumes actually deserves to be mentioned.
