Maremma Accommodation

Maremma is the green area that covers the southern part of the Tuscan Coast around the Monte Argentario, and a large inland area which reaches up to Monte Amiata. This beautiful part of Tuscany, so loved by the Etruscans, has a lot to offer: wild uncontaminated nature, thermal springs, unspoilt sandy beaches and clear waters, natural parks, medieval villages on top of hills, and, of course, great local food and wines. There’s no better place for an unforgettable holiday!

The Wildest Part of Tuscany

Maremma hosts some of the most interesting protected areas of all Italy, the natural reserves of Buriano and Orbetello and the wonderful Parco Naturale dell’ Uccellina, where wilderness and uncontaminated environment are still predominant. Once a swampy, unknown, and uninhabited land covered by forests and marshes, thanks to the requalification work ordered by Leopoldo II of the Lorraines in the 1800s, Maremma was gradually converted into one of the most fascinating parts in Tuscany. This is also the land of the famous “butteri”, cowboys breeding Maremman oxen and horses; they are great horse riders and occasionally exhibit at local events, such as the rodeo in Alberese held in August.

Scenic Landscapes and Sea Shores

The hills in Maremma are dotted with ancient watch towers and many small villages of Etruscan origin that are worth visiting: Massa Marittima with its splendid Duomo, the Etruscan archeological site at Vetulonia with its necropolis, the amazing Pitigliano, Sovana, Buriano, Cosa, and Roselle, another archeological site. The villages and ports facing the sea, such as Talamone, Castiglion della Pescaia, Punta Ala, Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are equally fascinating as the villages located inland. From its main port at Porto Santo Stefano, you can easily reach some of the most beautiful islands of all Italy, the Giglio and Giannutri islands that form the southern islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. This beautiful and lesser known part of Tuscany offers plenty of possibilities to suit everyone’s taste: hiking, trekking, swimming, cycling, horseback riding, surfing, wine tasting, visiting museums, castles and medieval towns as well as simply sunbathing and relaxing at the beach!
