The perfect resort for families and athletes on vacation along the Etruscan Coast

To review Poggio all’Agnello means to share our own (the TuscanyAccommodation team) favorite vacation getaway with our families! It is impossble, therefore, to not start reliving our sweet vacation memories, and if we seem to not be super objective in our review, it is likely because we like it so much we have chosen it for the last 4 years ;-).

What do we like best? We like that Poggio all’Agnello first of all has a double personality, between a family-friendly place perfect for families with kids of all ages, as well perfect for those that love outdoor activities and love staying active even while on vacation.

The location is perfect along the Etruscan Coast just 1km inland from the Baratti Gulf and a few meters from the Populonia train station. It is close to Piombino, San Vincenzo, Venturina Terme (for realxing spa days). This a lively part of the Tuscan coast, with many interesting sights to see, very well organized with many services for visitors and with many gorgeous beaches nearby, including the ones at Baratti and along the Rimigliano Park. Perfect for everyone!

Comfortable apartments to relax more than at home

The Poggio all’Agnello resort was born out of what was originally a large farm, an important part of the history of the Val di Cornia. Completely renovated, it offers over 200 apartments spread out over various buildings of many types and sizes, which can host from 2 to 8 or more guests.

Even if there isn't yet much tree cover (many small tree plantings all around), many of the apartments have their own outdoor space, such as a loggia or a pergola, ideal for providing shade and outdoor meals. We have stayed at apartments with a loggia as well as a pergola and they are very useful: we end up often having breakfast or brunch and dinner outside when we are at the apartment for mealtimes, becoming a part of the enjoyable moments spent here during our stay. There are also apartments without either (another year we had one of those), so make sure to request an apartment with an outdoor area.

The apartments are generally furnished in a quite simple, but functional, fashion and have everything you might need, including a broom, an iron and ironing board as well as drying rack.

In the kitchen, we have always found all of the basic tools for cooking "at home", although we have found it useful to bring along a larger bowl for making lots of pasta/salads and an extra sharp knife since the ones they have are not great. If you plan on cooking anything special where you know you need a particular tool, plan to bring it along (we like to take a small electric chopper). We have learned how to use and enjoy cooking with the induction stove top burners used in the apartments.

The apartments where we have stayed always have had a sofa-bed, which is great for the kids and easy to put away during the day so that it won't take up space in the apartment.

The apartments have always been super clean (and if you stay a week or more you will get the apartment cleaned mid-stay) and we have been able to request and use high chairs and cribs for small children as needed.

Needing to find something to complain about, we could point out they don't have a BBQ grill/s to be used outdoors and, more importantly, the Wi-Fi connection is not available in the apartments nor outside of them, only in the common areas.

Pools for everyone!

The three beautiful pools at Poggio all’Agnello are at the center of the common area and certainly the main attraction for all of the guests, along with the adjoining restaurant/coffee bar.

The large Olympic-size pool, used often by groups of athletes on sport retreats, is perfect for anyone wishing to keep training while on vacation, or at the very least doing some serious laps. 

The pool for children, about 60cm deep, is the most popular for small children while the mid-size pool, with hydromassagge jets and waterfall at its center, is ideal for older kids and adults wishing to have some fun in the pool and receive the benefits of water massage.

In addition to the pools, in the green areas at Poggio all’Agnello you will find an exercise route as well as a running route along the perimeter of the resort, two tennis courts, two 5-a-sider soccer fields and two small but well-equipped gym rooms, which can be used by guests on request (they are often used by the sports teams).

It is also possible to rent bikes for the entire family or to book a bike tour, thanks to specialized operators that have their offices directly within Poggio all’Agnello.

By following the splendid viale degli olivi, a path lined by olive trees, by either foot or by bike, you will find yourself just 1km from Baratti and on the Strada delle Principessa. It is perfect for anyone wishing to bike to the beach or to go for a run, as a bit further north a bike lane starts and runs along the main road to San Vincenzo and along the pine woods and beaches of Rimigliano.

For these many facilities, don't be surprised to find large sports teams, not just for swimming, at Poggio all’Agnello on their retreats during your holiday.

A Resort perfect for families (restaurant, park and minimarket)

We really love the complete freedom we have while we are guests at Poggio all’Agnello, we move around with our own car, are able to park near the apartment and follow our own hours and rhythms.

The apartments are perfect for families, most have wide garden areas around the apartment far from cars, which are only along the parking areas on the perimiter of the main resort. Parents can feel assured that kids play far from moving cars.

If you're missing something and don't want to go far, there is small market on-site with the most common essential products. With a bit more distance, just a few hundred meters outside the resort, you'll find the small town of Populonia Stazione. There, you'll find a small supermarket, a pharmacy, a post office and the train station. Venturina Terme is the closest "large" town just 15 min away by car, and where we recommend you go to the larger supermarkets to shop for your weekly groceries.

At Poggio all'Agnello, there is also a playground for children and a kid's club during the month of August where during 3 set times of the day your children can go play and interact with other kids at the resort. There are at least 2 staff members with the group that create games and activities to offer something different to children beyond the pool.

Finally, the on-site restaurant/pizzeria is ideal for those evenings when you don't want to drive out to eat! There is a wide selection of pizzas and many Italian dishes, including many grilled meats. It, unfortunately, does not offer many choices for vegetarians and thus we mainly go there for pizza. If you also do not want to dress up and make the kids sit still for a dinner out, you can send someone over to order pizzas for the family and carry them back to be enjoyed at your apartment.... they always arrived super hot from the oven! ;-)

In the heart of the Etruscan Coast

Poggio all’Agnello is easy to reach, both by car and by train, and its position just a few hundred meters from the main Strada della Principessa coastal road makes it easy to explore the Etruscan Coast from Piombino to San Vincenzo as well as inland toward Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Castagneto Carducci.

It is a particularly lively area of the Tuscan coast, and very well-organized to welcome visitors during the summer with many attractions and restaurants. The main attraction during the warm months is obviously the sea and its beaches! Closest to Poggio all’Agnello (just 2 km) is the famous Baratti Gulf with its beach and the many beaches along the Strada della Principessa that goes north to San Vincenzo, including our favorite Rimigliano. The Hot Springs at Venturina are super close, where you'll find several hotels and spa centers to choose from not far from Poggio all’Agnello to add another relaxing aspect to your holidays in the area.
