Piancastagnaio Accommodation
Piancastagnaio is the southest locality in province of Siena, situated close to San Casciano dei Bagni on the borders with Lazio, another Tuscan region. This medieval nice town is a perfect location for spending a few days to the discover of the territory, rich in parish churches and natural public areas, such as the Pigelleto Natural Reserve, a Natural Protected Area of Local Interest. The Aldobrandeschi Castel is also worthy a visit, as well as the medieval old city center with its tiny characteristic streets.
Piancastagnaio is home to the traditional Palio during which the 4 rioni give birth to a local competition, but the manifestation you should not miss out usually takes place just before the palio: called Asta and Bacchetta, it’s a sort of parade in medieval costumes where two sbandieratori - flag throwers - perform with the music of a drummer. The most beautiful choreography wins the competition.
