The Birthplace of Pontormo
Empoli’s historical center is very charming, especially the Piazza dei Leoni or the Lions’ Square, with a beautiful fountain right in the middle of the square. On one side of the square you can admire the Collegiata of S. Andrea, an ancient church hosting notable paintings and frescoes dating from the 14th century. The Romanesque facade is beautiful, characterized by white and green marble stones.
Empoli is also renowned to be the birthplace of the Pontormo, famous painter of the 16th century that worked for the Medici family and under the Ghirlandaio’s school. You can admire some beautiful paintings of the Pontormo’s paintings in the Church of San Michele in Pontorme.
But Empoli is also the ideal place to indulge is some good shopping! the streets of the city center are full of nice shops of all kinds.
