Pistoia is a city rich in art and culture, which offers unique pleasure moments at whatever time you decide to visit it.
Luglio (July) Pistoiese
That said, the month of July deserves, however, a particular mention, since it represents one of the best occasion for taking part to some of the most famous local events. It's not by chance that tourists and aficionados come from all around Tuscany (and not only) in occasion of the renowned Luglio pistoiese.
The 25th is, in fact, a memorable date: the Patron Saint (Saint Jacopo) festival is celebrated with the traditional Palio, currently called Giostra dell'Orso, the famous horse race which has always taken place in the Cathedral Square. While this can be considered the religious, state and cultural focus of Pistoia, Piazza della Scala is, instead, its youth and social meeting point, which teems with cheerful people during renowned summer events like the Pistoia Blues, the Traditional music date since ever.
The surroundings: thermal baths and pubs
Pistoia is located at a short driving distance from the coastline of Versilia and its holiday resorts like Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi (renowned for its nightlife), as well as from the Tuscan apennines: a wonderful location, then, halfway between sea and mountains...and not only! Some of the cities situated in the province of Pistoia are very important and famous thermal resorts, like Montecatini and Monsummano Terme just to mention a few. At the cutting-edge of thermal tourism during last century, they were the preferred destinations of czars, emirs and emperors from all around the world.
Pistoia zoo: for children and...grown-ups!
If this welcoming city has not yet aroused your curiosity, you should maybe know that Pistoia is a children friendly city! Its zoo is a wonderland for everybody, adults and children. The park is about 7 hectares and preserves over 400 animals part of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Here you can admire lions, giraffes, lions, zebras, flamingos and storks.
