The Carnival of Viareggio
Viareggio was born as a small fishing harbour and then developed as the industry of shipyards for boats and yachts grew. Today, the town is very elegant and offers visitors a long seaside promenade where you can enjoy leisurely walks, stopping at the Torre Matilde or in Piazza Shelley for a before- or after- dinner drink. The town is famous all over the world for its Carnival, characterized by a great parade of allegorical floats and hundreds of people in gaudy costumes.
Other events in Viareggio are the Viareggio Literary Award and many shows take place at the Cittadella del Carnevale. Near Viareggio, another interesting seaside resort is Torre del Lago, where you can visit the Museo Villa Puccini, where the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini lived during the last years of his life. In the summer, enjoy an evening at the Puccini Opera Festival in the outdoor theatre besides the Lake of Massaciuccoli.
