Barga, the beloved adoptive home to Giovanni Pascoli
Barga may be considered the adoptive town of the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli, who has been there buried after he died in Bologna. Today Casa Pascoli, situated in Castelvecchio Pascoli - the name is obviously to celebrate the artist - near Barga, is a museum still preserving some works of Pascoli, as well as the original rooms and relative furnishings. Another interesting attraction for all fond of Italian literature and culture is the Teatro dei Differenti (Theatre of Deviants in literal English), the theatre where Pascoli pronounced that famous speech that drove Italy in favour of Libyan war in 1911; today is home to many events and manifestation that celebrate the renowned Italian poet.
Barga, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
Even if Barga is not one of the most visited destinations of Italy, it has been officially declared beautiful and interesting town of Italy thanks both to its artistic and cultural heritage, and its varied natural resources. Set in the midst of Garfagnana and main town of this wonderful area, it’s situated at a stones’ throw from the regional Park of Apuan Alps, Lunigiana and the thermal town of Bagni di Lucca, from where Abetone and the mountains of Appennino Pistoiese are easily reachable. Barga is then the ideal place for holidays dedicated to trekking itineraries and trips among nature. For all those interested in a longer stay, the old center of the town is rich in public and religious architectural attractions, among which the Church of San Cristoforo and Podestà Palace (today home to the Civic Museum) are really worth a visit.
During Summer, moreover, Barga offers many events and manifestations celebrating the local food and cultural traditions you shouldn’t absolutely miss out!
How to get around in the city
At Barga, or more exactly at Fornaci di Barga, there’s a train station connecting the city with Lucca, where other tourist destinations of Tuscany are easily reachable from. Lazzi and Clap bus companies provide public transport services, but car is once again more convenient for getting around in the city and the nearby destinations and natural attractions.
