A Journey Back in Time

The historical center has incredibly preserved its medieval look, and in fact San Gimignano has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vehicles are prohibited inside the town's walls, and this wonderfully contributes to its timeless feel; it's like taking a journey back in time to the Middle Ages!

In addition to the 15 medieval towers (72 in origin), you can admire the Palazzo del Popolo, and the Museo Civico and Pinacoteca displaying many beautiful paintings by Filippino Lippi and by Pinturicchio.

The suggestive and scenic open space of the lovely Piazza della Cisterna is characterized by the monumental well of the 13th century, and is surrounded by many beautiful ancient buildings. Among its many treasures, you shouldn't miss the delicious Vernaccia of San Gimignano, an intense scented white wine, well known all over the world, and the first to gain the DOC denomination. Finally, the intriguing and macabre Tortures Museum is surely worth a visit: medieval torture machines and instruments will literally make you shiver!
