Accommodation in Chianti

Chianti, incredibly famous for its wines, is probably the best known part of Italy all over the world. The Chianti area is the hilly region right in the heart of Tuscany which embraces an area that stretches from Florence to Siena and Arezzo. The undulating and varied beautiful landscapes of this amazing land offer continuous changes in scenery: from extensive vineyards and olive groves on the more gentle hills to the small fortified medieval villages and isolated rural homes, oak woods, cypress trees, chestnut and fir trees crowning the highest hills.

The land of Wine par excellence

Chianti is famous all over the world for its superb "Chianti Classico" wine, the wine par excellence of Italy, and for its extra virgin olive oil and countless other tasty regional products. Chianti Classico wines are characterized by the Gallo Nero or Black Rooster label and have very strict and high quality control standards. You definitely should also try the sweet Vin Santo and, of course, the digestive Chianti grappa! Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti are the three main villages of this region; they formed the so called "Lega del Chianti" founded by the city of Florence in the distant 1384 as a defense against the rival city of Siena.

Fantastic scenery and hilltop towns

You should definitely not miss the pleasure of driving down the famous Via Chiantigiana road from Florence and along the wine routes in this region. Driving from Florence, the first village you meet is Impruneta, famous for its terracotta works. You can then proceed south and visit the Castello di Verrazzano near Greve. Once you have crossed the Greve river, you enter Greve in Chianti, a popular destination amongst visitors interested in winery tours and wine tastings. The town and its surroundings offer a wonderful landscape and scenery: make a short detour to visit the small hamlet of Montefioralle over Greve.

Continuing on the Via Chiantigiana, you may stop in Panzano and visit its lovely castle, and then head on to visit Radda in Chianti, which hosts the head office of the Chianti Gallo Nero consortium. Your next stop can be the charming village of Castellina in Chianti, offering views over three valleys. The city has a lovely 13th century castle and the unique vaulted street called the “Via delle Volte”. The beautiful Castello di Brolio with its famous wine cellars near Gaiole in Chianti is also worth a visit. Make sure to stop and relax in one of the many rustic farmhouses or modern and elegant hotels located in the countryside and listed here so that you can enjoy a peaceful holiday in Tuscany!
